Andrew
Andrew spent his early years as a
fisherman on the Sea of Galilee. He became a follower of John the
Baptist and later a companion of Jesus. He is credited with having
introduced his brother Peter to Jesus who called them to forsake their
mundane occupation to become, "Fishers of Men." His later missionary
activity was in Greece where he was imprisoned and crucified by order of
the proconsul whose wife had become estranged from her husband by the
preaching of Andrew. The X-like symbol indicates the shape of the cross
on which he was put to death.
