James. Like
Peter and Andrew, James and John were brothers. The four of them
were probably partners in the business of fishing. Together they
formed an inner circle of disciples closest to Jesus. Following
the death and resurrection of Jesus, James shared the leadership
of the church in Jerusalem with Peter. He was the first of the
disciples to suffer martyrdom; beheaded by Herod Agrippa I. The
three escallop shells are symbols of his pilgrimage and
missionary journeys |
