Judas
Judas Iscariot is more likely a descriptive
name than a family name. The most plausible meaning of Iscariot
is, "Man of the Dagger," which suggests that Judas, like Simon
the Zealot, was a member of a revolutionary group ready to
employ military strength against the Roman Empire. Judas is
remembered as the disillusioned and impatient disciple who
betrayed Jesus. The symbol of the noose and the thirty coins,
(actually Tyrian shekels), recalls Matthew 27:5, "And throwing
down the pieces of silver in the temple….he went and hanged
himself."
