Matthew
Matthew is also known as Levi in the Gospels of Mark and
Luke. The name, Matthew, means, "Gift of Yahweh." He
probably lived in or near Capernaum, collecting tolls
for Herod Antipas on the main road between Damascus and
the cities of Palestine. As a relatively wealthy man,
his lifestyle changed dramatically after he became a
disciple of Jesus. It seems likely that he wrote the
Gospel that bears his name. The symbol of three purses
refers to his early occupation as a tax collector
