Peter
Peter, sometimes called, "The Prince of the
Apostles," appears to have been the acknowledged
leader of the disciples. Like his brother,
Andrew, he was a fisherman from Capernaum. His
given name, Simon, was changed by Jesus to
Peter, meaning, "The Rock," after he
acknowledged Jesus to be the Messiah. His
missionary activity culminated in Rome where he
met a martyr’s death at the direction of the
emperor Nero. The inverted cross is a reminder
of the tradition that he chose to be crucified
head downward because he felt unworthy of dying
in the same fashion as the Christ. |
