Simon
Simon is identified as, "The
Zealot," meaning that he was a
member of a revolutionary group
called the Zealots who insisted
that political submission to
Rome was denial of God’s
lordship. His selection by Jesus
to be a disciple indicates the
breadth of the political
spectrum represented in the
group of disciples; Matthew, the
arch conservative on the one
hand, and Simon the fanatical
liberal on the other. The symbol
of the fish-and-the-book,
suggests that he was, "A Fisher
of Men," in behalf of the Gospel |
