Thomas
Thomas is a
somewhat shadowy
figure, known to
us primarily in
the Gospel of
John as, "The
Doubter."
According to the
Gospel of Mark,
he was the
eighth to be
called by Jesus
to be a
disciple.
Tradition says
that he went to
India as a
missionary where
he erected a
church with his
own hands, and
that he was put
to death by a
spear. His work
as a carpenter
caused him to
become the
patron saint of
architects,
masons and
stonecutters.
His symbol is a
carpenter’s
square by which
he lived and a
spear by which
he died.
