Bartholomew
Bartholomew is listed in the Gospel
of Matthew as a companion of Philip in the mission to the Jewish people
of Galilee. His name means, "The Son of Tolmai," indicating not only a
thoroughly Hebrew lineage, but also the possibility that he had another
name; in this case, Nathaniel. Subsequent Christian literature suggests
that he took the Gospel to India where he was flayed, beheaded and
crucified. Hence, the symbol of the flaying knife.
